Ethiopia’s prime minster has apologised for the death and destruction caused by protests in the Oromia region.

But Hailemariam Desalegn, addressing parliament in the capital, Addis Ababa, said “anti-peace forces” were responsible for the violence.

He said that the government needs to listen to the grievances of the people.

Oromia has been hit by months of unrest, in which 200 people have reportedly died – a number disputed by the government.

The authorities deny that security forces have been involved in a violent crackdown.

The protests began over government plans to expand the capital’s administrative control into the Oromia region, which have since been dropped.

Oromia at a glance:

Map of Ethiopia
  • Oromia is Ethiopia’s largest region, surrounding the capital, Addis Ababa
  • Oromo are Ethiopia’s biggest ethnic group – making up about a third of Ethiopia’s 95 million people
  • The Oromo Federalist Congress (OFC) is Oromia’s largest legally registered political party, but holds no seats in parliament

The government later dropped the plan, but protesters dismissed the decision as “too little too late”.

Oromia is Ethiopia’s largest region and the Oromo people, who make up a third of Ethiopia’s population, have complained of historic economic and political marginalisation.

Mr Hailemariam told parliament that “anti-peace forces… in a bid to divert the people’s legitimate questions… have inflicted losses on human lives and government and private property”.

But according to messages on the ministry of foreign affairs Twitter feed, the prime minster admitted the problems in Oromia “are direct results of unresponsiveness and unemployment”.

He added that the government recognises the need to address grievances and said it “unreservedly apologises to our people for what happened”.

However, the government “will intensify their decisive actions against the anti-peace forces,” he said.

Ethiopia: Oromo community protests in London over ‘forced eviction and ethnic cleansing’

12 Dec

UK (International Business Times) —  Members of the Oromo community in the UK have gathered in central London to protest against the forced eviction of their people in Ethiopia. Protesters argued the Ethiopian government’s so-called “master plan” to expand the borders of capital Addis Ababa into the regional state of Oromia will lead to the eviction of Oromo people from their farmlands.

The forced evictions allow authorities to build roads and infrastructures. As a result, Oromo people lose their livelihoods and become poor. Demonstrators also argued that forced evictions as well as a perceived marginalisation by the government threatens the survival of their culture and language.

Activists also claimed Ethiopian security forces persecute and kill Oromo protesters. Earlier in December, reports alleged that at least seven Oromos were killed during protests against Addis Ababa expansion. Oromia police confirmed three people were killed, defying them as “anti-peace forces”.

In May 2014, at least 11 students were killed during demonstrations against the master plan. Protesters set fire to a bank, a gas station and some government buildings, said the police, while the government denied that protesters were killed.

Several NGOs have condemned the persecution of Oromos in Ethiopia. Amnesty International said in a 2014 report that Oromo dissidents were arrested tortured and killed. The report said:“The Ethiopian government’s relentless crackdown on real or imagined dissent among the Oromo is sweeping in its scale and often shocking in its brutality. This is apparently intended to warn, control or silence all signs of ‘political disobedience’ in the region.”

Abiy Berhane, Minister Counsellor at the Embassy of Ethiopia in London, toldIBTimes UK he was not aware of the protest occurred on 10 December. He said: “Such a demonstration can only be held by the usual group of people with the same agenda that has not attracted support from many Ethiopians inside or outside the country.

The protesters are members and sympathisers of violent opposition groups who are determined to overthrow the constitutional order in Ethiopia by force. The allegations they made are fabrications that are designed to gain propaganda mileage for the violent objectives they are trying to promote in Ethiopia.

There has never been any eviction of the Oromo people from their farms,” Berhane continued. “The purpose of the Addis Ababa Integrated Master Plan, which is said to be the subject of their protest, is to ensure that towns that are adjacent to Addis Ababa and located in Oromia region, benefit from development activities taking place in the capital city.

“These opposition groups have made it a habit to engage in a malicious campaign to tarnish the image of Ethiopia. Ethiopia is a federal state composed of more than 80 nations, nationalities and peoples, among which the Oromos feature prominently and contribute enormously for the socio-economic transformation currently taking place in the country.”

Who are the Oromos?

Oromo people are Ethiopia’s largest ethnic group and their population amounts to more than 25 million (around 35% of Ethiopia’s total population). They originated in the Horn of Africa, where they are believed to have lived for millennia.

The Oromo are divided in two main sub-groups. People belonging to the Borana Oromo group mainly inhabit southern Ethiopia and parts of Kenya. The Barentu Oromos can be found in Oromia as well as other areas of Ethiopia and Somalia.

Oromo people speak Afaan Oromoo, as well as Amharic and Tigrinya. They are mainly Christian and Muslim, while only 3% still follows the traditional religion based on the worshipping of the god Waaq.

Oromo are mainly farmers and cattle herders. They have distinguished themselves throughout history for their strong military organisation.

In 1973, they created the Oromo Liberation Front (OLF) that stemmed from the discontent among people over the marginalisation by the government. OLF also calls for the self-determination of the Oromo people. It has been deemed as a terror organisation by the government.

Statement by the Democratic Change in Ethiopia Support Organization in Norway

Statement by the Democratic Change in Ethiopia Support Organization in Norway (DCESON) Date : 08.12.2015
We the members of the DCESON strongly condemn the killings the regime of the Tigray People`s Liberation Front has perpetuated against the students of the Oromo and civilians in Gondar in Ethiopia. The TPLF regime has intensified its repressions and use of force against civilians in different parts of the country. The repressive measures of the regime have created a dangerous and worrisome situation in the country. In spite of the repressions and killings, Ethiopians have continued to oppose and protest against the regime in the Oromo and Gondar regions.

The TPLF regime has continued to step up its use of force and repressive measures against the young in schools and University students. The regime has reacted to the protests by leashing its brutal security forces that have been beating, killing and imprisoning the protesters. However, the Public anger and protests are increasing and spreading in the country. The violent responses of dictatorial ethnic regime are inflaming the situation.

The TPLF regime has hidden agenda behind the so called Addis Ababa master plan it made public a year ago. The master plan sparked wide spread protests in the Oromo region and the Security forces of the regime killed, imprisoned and tortured many protesters then too. The high officials of the regime have threatened all those who oppose and protest against the master plan. The DCESON believes that the TPLF regime has come up with the so called Addis Ababa Master Plan to intensify the urban land grab its officials, members and cadres are conducting.

The master plan is part of the regime`s corruption scheme designed to expand its land grab policy. Many residents have been displaced from the different areas (Abu Chefe, Gelan, Kilinto Kersan, Bole, Yerer Ber and Gola). The land grab has led to displacements and sufferings. Every Ethiopian should condemn these illegal and undemocratic measures the regime is taking against citizens. Thus, the public does have any confidence in the regime and does not believe in the official reasons and arguments for the implementation of the master plan.

The racist regime of the TPLF had prevented inmates from the big prison fire that engulfed the prison in the town of Gondar, The cells were locked and many inmates have lost their lives in the fire. Those who managed to escape the inferno were shot and killed by the forces of the regime. This is a horrendous crime even the fascists had not committed during the second world war. The TPLF has been spreading its vicious hatred and divisions in Ethiopia since its inception. As part of its nightmare of creating the independent Tigray, the TPLF has annexed fertile lands from the Gondar region of Wolqait Tegede and declared war on the residents there. In addition, the TPLF has made secret deal with the government f Sudan to transfer a large chunk of fertile Ethiopian land to the sovereignty of the latter. The deal will be implemented this month and we call on all Ethiopians to stand up and defend the sovereignty of our country.

Dear Ethiopians; We should unite and rise together to foil the dangerous conspiracy of the TPLF to divide Ethiopians and disintegrate our country.

Victory to the people of Ethiopia,
Democratic change in Ethiopia support organization in Norway (DCESON).

OromoProtests: U.S. Senators Raise Concern About Ethiopian Govt’s Crackdown on Oromo Protests

In a letter (see below) addressed to the U.S. Secretary of State, Mr. John Kerry, and dated June 19, 2014, U.S. Senators from the State of Washington, Sen. Maria Cantwell and Sen. Patty Murray, raised concerns about the Ethiopian government’s crackdown on the nonviolent student-led #OromoProtests movement, which fights to stop the implementation of the Addis Ababa Master Plan, a plan to expand the administrative boundaries of Addis Ababa by annexing land from the State of Oromia, and by evicting millions of Oromo farmers from the Oromian districts adjacent to Addis Ababa – both under the pretext of “urban development.”

Leading up to this letter, it’s to be remembered that several members of the Oromo community in the State of Washington staged a 3-day hunger-strike earlier in June 2014 in front of Seattle’s Federal Building to draw attention to the violent response of the Ethiopian government to the peaceful demands raised by #OromoProtests in college and university campuses across Oromia in April and May 2014. The killings and imprisonments of Oromo students and civilians by the TPLF Ethiopian regime have continued unabated, in violations of local and international human rights laws.

Lawmakers from US, EU and UK demand release of death-row Brit in Ethiopia

(Reprieve) – A group of legislators from the US, UK and Europe have demanded the release of a British activist who has been held in a secret Ethiopian prison for over a year.Andargachew Tsgie Before the T-TPLF Inquisition?

Andargachew ‘Andy’ Tsege, a prominent figure in the Ethiopian opposition, was abducted at a Yemeni airport in June 2014 and forcibly taken to Ethiopia. He has been held since in a secret location, and has been denied access to a lawyer, his family, proper consular visits and independent medical treatment. Andy was sentenced to death in absentia in 2009 on charges relating to his political activities. Torture of political prisoners in Ethiopia is common, and the UN and human rights organization Reprieve – which is assisting Mr Tsege’s family – have raised concerns that he is being mistreated.

In a letter to the Prime Minister of Ethiopia, Hailemariam Desalegn, the group – which includes US Congressman Dana Rohrabacher, British MPs Jeremy Corbyn and Emily Thornberry, Baron Dholakia of the UK House of Lords, and MEPs Ana Gomes and Richard Howitt – called Ethiopia’s behaviour “unconscionable and illegal.” Their letter says: “Your government’s treatment of [Mr Tsege] is a stain on its reputation, and threatens to isolate Ethiopia internationally. Andargachew Tsege’s ordeal has gone on long enough; we call on you to release him without delay and facilitate his return home to his family.”

The call follows recent criticism by President Obama of Ethiopia’s silencing of its critics, during his first trip to the country. Speaking at the African Union in Addis Ababa, Mr Obama said: “When journalists are put behind bars for doing their jobs, when activists are threatened – you may have democracy in name but not in substance.”

Mr Tsege, whose partner and young children are American citizens, has previously travelled to Washington DC to speak about human rights concerns in Ethiopia. He told Congress in 2006 that “the scale of repression [by the current government] has exceeded Ethiopia’s darkest hours during the military dictatorship.”

Commenting, Maya Foa, head of the death penalty team at Reprieve, said: “From the White House to Congress and the European and British Parliaments, calls are growing for Ethiopia to change course and stop its persecution of dissidents like Andy. These lawmakers are right to say that Ethiopia is risking its international reputation with its shocking treatment of Andy, which has included rendition, secret detention, torture and a nakedly political and unlawful death sentence. Prime Minister Desalegn must listen, and return Andy to his family in Britain without delay.”

Ethiopia’s crackdown on dissent drives opposition to push for ‘freedom first’

Government’s critics weigh options after ruling party landslide leads to loss of faith in ballot box while case of Zone 9 bloggers discourages free speech

On the very day Ethiopia’s ruling party celebrated another crushing electoral victory, a young blogger on trial under anti-terrorism laws in an Addis Ababa courtroom lashed out at the authorities.

“You yourself should respect the law,” said Abel Wabella, 28, from the Zone 9blogging group, after judges denied him the chance to protest against the tortuous pace of legal proceedings that began more than a year ago.

The case of nine journalists and bloggers arrested in 2014 has been decried byhuman rights groups as an example of Ethiopian authorities’ crackdown on dissent. The nine were detained on allegations that they worked for foreign human rights groups or had used social media to incite violence.

Prosecutors have yet to present any evidence of illegal activity against the Zone 9 defendants, who say they merely exercised their constitutional right to freedom of expression. Wabella’s frustration is symptomatic of a generation of politically engaged Ethiopians who have no faith in the ballot box and are wary of expressing dissent through other channels in a country that is regularly criticised by rights groups for stifling basic freedoms.

Opponents of the government despair at this stagnant environment, said one government critic on social media, who did not want to be identified for fear of being harassed by the authorities. “If Zone 9 is not tolerated then it seems there is no political space to engage,” he said.

The latest landslide at the ballot box means that Ethiopia will be ruled until at least 2020 by the Ethiopian Peoples’ Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF), a former rebel group, which took power in 1991 by unseating a military regime. All 442 constituencies announced so far have gone to the ruling coalition, giving them a majority in the 547-seat parliament.

The opposition lost in all 23 constituencies in Addis Ababa last month, including the one seat they had won in 2010. Local newspaper reports suggest the EPRDF increased its share of the popular vote by 10% to 64%.

Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn’s government says it has delivered economic development and stability, but critics maintain this has come at the cost of human rights.

Yilkal Getnet, leader of opposition rising star the Blue party, says the claims of economic development are “not real”. The Blue party captured 16% of the vote in Addis Ababa this time, but failed to secure a seat under the first-past-the-post electoral system.

Getnet says the opposition’s plan is to push for “freedom first” rather than challenging the government’s policies.

Abel Asrat, an online entrepreneur who is politically independent, said the Blue party shrewdly capitalised on popular anger over the execution by Isis militants of Ethiopian migrants in Libya in April.

But the party, which was formed in 2012, now needs a more substantial and moderate programme, he said. “The vast majority of the voters are in the middle. You have to focus on them rather than those that have made up their mind.”

With more than 2 million Facebook users in Ethiopia, the opposition should also use social media more to reach out to young undecided voters, Asrat said. Readmore
